Spartanburg Housing Authority 80th Anniversary. 1939 - 2019.

History:

Men breaking ground. Old Spartanburg.

  • October 2, 1939 - Housing Authority has its first meeting. E.L. Hertzog is named the first executive director.
  • September 10, 1940 - Groundbreaking for Tobe Hartwell Courts.
  • 1941 - Camp Croft Courts opened to house families of servicemen stationed at Camp Croft. After World War II, the complex was used first for veteran housing and later for low income housing.
  • November 1941 - George B. Dean named Executive Director.
  • August 31, 1950 - Groundbreaking held for Phyllis Goins Courts. Construction also begins on Phyllis Goins, Tobe Hartwell Extension and Woodworth Homes, representing an eventual addition of 400 apartments.
  • December 1950 - C. Henry Cohen named executive director.
  • August 31, 1951 - Woodworth Homes opens.
  • December 31, 1951 - Phyllis Goins Courts opens.
  • May 31, 1952 - Tobe Hartwell Extension opens.
  • February 1959 - Frank M. Gooch named executive director.
